A turned metal barrel for the Soviet 85 mm ZiS-S-53 gun for the model of the T-34/85 tank of the 1943 and 1944 patterns in 1:48 scale. A replacement for the plastic part from the kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The barrel is the most conspicuous long part on a tank model, and the plastic version from a kit is usually made of two halves. A lengthwise seam is left on it that has to be sanded down, and in doing so the circular cross section is easily sanded away. With a turned metal part that step is done away with: it is straight along its whole length, has a circular cross section and a finished muzzle recess that is hard to drill in plastic. It will also take handling without bending.
The 85 mm ZiS-S-53 gun gave the T-34/85 tank its new larger turret and added markedly to its effect against the earlier armament of the T-34 series. The L/51 figure in the name is not another caliber but the length of the barrel expressed in multiples of the caliber. The accessory is intended for the forms of the tank of the 1943 and 1944 patterns.
Cut the plastic barrel off with a saw right at the gun mantlet and level the surface. If need be, widen the hole for the pin of the metal part carefully, so the barrel seats on the axis and does not point upwards. Glue it with super glue; polystyrene cement will not hold on metal. Before painting, wash and degrease the part and use a primer for metal, or the paint will rub off the smooth surface.
The package holds the barrel. The model, glue and paints are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
