A photo-etched detail set from Aber for the Soviet KV-1 and KV-2 heavy tanks in 1:48 scale. The metal parts refine a model; on its own it is not a kit.

A photo-etched detail set from the Polish maker Aber in 1:48 scale for the Soviet KV-1 and KV-2 heavy tanks. It is not a model but an accessory to a plastic kit, which has to be obtained separately. The etched metal parts replace thin-walled fittings of the external gear, where the difference against plastic shows at first glance – sheet covers, brackets and small hull fittings.
The heavy tanks of the KV family went into action from 1940 and in the first months of the fighting in 1941 they were among the best-armored machines on the battlefield. The KV-1 carried a 76.2 mm gun, while the more ponderous KV-2 had an enormous slab-sided turret with a 152 mm howitzer meant against fortifications. Both types shared the chassis and the basis of the hull. The weak points were the transmission and the overall weight, which cost a number of vehicles through breakdowns rather than enemy fire. The KV family later gave way to lighter and better-balanced types.
Take the photo-etched parts out with a scalpel, not by twisting; work with fine-tipped tweezers. Run the bends along the scored lines, best in a photo-etch bending tool. Glue them with cyanoacrylate glue applied in the smallest amount – any excess will flood the relief. Degrease the metal before painting and spray it with a primer for metal. On Soviet vehicles a green base, a dark wash into the gaps and pronounced mud or dust weathering on the running gear and the lower parts of the hull all work well.
This is a detail accessory, not a standalone model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
