An injection-molded plastic kit of the British Supermarine Spitfire Mk.II fighter in 1:48 scale. It is a proven mold with a low part count, fine raised panel lines and a canopy in three parts, which can be shown open or closed. The box holds parts in single-color plastic, clear parts and waterslide decals. The cockpit has an instrument panel, a seat, a control column, pedals and bulkheads, so there is something to show through an open canopy.
The Spitfire Mk.II followed on from the first production Spitfires and from the autumn of 1940 gradually replaced the Mk.I version with RAF squadrons. The main change was the more powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin XII engine and a cartridge starter, which simplified turning the engine over. The aircraft reached a speed of around 580 kilometers per hour and was used at the end of the Battle of Britain and on the offensive flights over the English Channel that followed. Depending on the production sub-version it carried either eight 7.7 mm machine guns or a pair of 20 mm cannons supplemented by machine guns.
The build suits less experienced modelers too. Glue the parts with thin cement for plastic and sand the joints with a fine abrasive film; take care over the raised panel lines, which are best restored by scribing after sanding. Finish and paint the cockpit before the fuselage is closed up, and mask the clear parts and varnish them together with the whole model. The typical British scheme is dark brown and dark green on the upper surfaces with a light underside; spray a gloss varnish before the decals and unify the surface with a matte one once it has dried.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
