This detail set from the maker Metallic Details replaces the exit sections of the engines of a plastic Su-27 kit with more accurate resin castings in 1:48 scale. On this aircraft the nozzles are among the most noticeable features of the rear end and in injection-molded plastic they tend to be simplified: they lack the thin edges of the segments as well as the internal structure. It is an aftermarket accessory; the model of the aircraft itself is not included in the package.
The Su-27 is a Soviet heavy twin-engine fighter aircraft with a markedly blended fuselage and wing, two vertical tails and the engines in separate nacelles. The variable nozzles with movable segments change visibly according to the running mode of the engine, so two aircraft in a photograph often differ in how far they are opened. The design with a large fuel load and a powerful radar predestined the machine for long-range missions and its airframe became the basis of a whole family of derived versions.
Wash the castings in warm water with detergent, cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutting disc and level the mating surfaces by wet sanding with respiratory protection. They are glued with cyanoacrylate. It is best to paint the nozzles separately and to glue them on only after spraying. Metal surfaces come into their own on a smooth gloss base: first a primer, then a metallic shade, and set the individual segments apart with gentle toning. Inside the nozzle a dark wash and light soot suit well; complete the outer transition area with heat tinting applied with heavily thinned paint.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The basic kit, the glue and the paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
