A veneer deck for the Japanese battleship Mikasa in 1:700 scale from Artwox Model will replace the plastic deck of the kit with self-adhesive wooden veneer with the laying of the planks printed on it.
Responsibility details are not available.
An accessory, not a kit. The sheet of thin wooden veneer is cut to the shape of the decks of one particular kit, Seals Models SMP-001, and on the back has an adhesive layer protected by a film. On a ship from the turn of the century, whose decks were extensive and almost unbroken, their appearance plays an exceptionally large part in the overall impression of a model.
The Mikasa was a pre-dreadnought of the Imperial Japanese Navy, built at Barrow-in-Furness in Britain and completed in 1902. The main armament consisted of four 305 mm guns in two twin turrets, supplemented with a numerous medium-caliber secondary battery in casemates. The ship is best known as the flagship at the Battle of Tsushima in May 1905. She has survived to this day and is displayed as a museum ship at Yokosuka, so she is one of the few subjects a modeler can look at with his own eyes.
The decks of pre-dreadnoughts are simpler in shape than those of later battleships, but larger and more unbroken, so every bubble shows all the more. Sand the plastic smooth and degrease it before gluing. Lay the veneer from the longitudinal axis and work toward the outline, pushing the air out with a soft cloth from the center outward. Around the casemate openings and the hatches, trim the material with a sharp blade only once it is glued on. If you want to age the teak, use a very thinned oil or enamel wash: the veneer is absorbent, so always test on an offcut first.
This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model of the ship. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
