About product

Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I 1:48 – a Big Ed pack from Eduard

Big Ed is the name of the line in which the Czech manufacturer Eduard brings several separately sold accessory sets for the same model together in a single box. The basis is usually photo-etched sheet, that is thin metal parts produced photochemically, which replace or supplement the plastic parts of a model where injection-molded plastic is too thick. It is not a kit: the model, paints and glues are not part of the package and the set makes sense only alongside a model in 1:48 scale that is being built or made ready.

Why photo-etched parts instead of plastic

An etch solves exactly what a mold for plastic cannot. Instrument panels, seat harnesses, radiator grilles, covers, hinges and flaps are in reality tenths of a millimeter thick, which a plastic part will never reach. A metal part can moreover be folded, so even a deformation or a functional position can be suggested. The price for that is a different building technology: the parts are cut from the fret with a sharp knife on a hard surface, folded in a bending tool or between blades and bonded with super glue.

Building and painting tips

Degrease the sheet before gluing, otherwise neither paint nor glue will hold. It is advisable to anneal the parts briefly over a flame; the metal softens and shapes better with no risk of cracking in the fold. Glue sparingly, as excess super glue turns white and clogs the detail; the gel or a slower-setting version helps with precise positioning. Start the painting with a good primer for metal. With parts that are glued onto plastic, first sand the plastic original smooth so that the etch sits down with no step.

Who the pack is for

  • Modelers who want the Spitfire Mk.I at the maximum level of detail.
  • Those who would rather have the sets for one model together in a single box than buy them one by one.
  • More experienced builders who already have experience of working with photo-etched parts.
  • Competition modelers in 1:48 scale.

This is a collection of accessory parts, not a kit. The model, paints, glues and tools are not included in the package.

FAQ

The Big Ed line brings several separate accessory sets for one model together. Which sets the pack contains is stated on its box.

It is not. It is a collection of accessory parts intended for a model you obtain separately. Without the base model the set makes no sense.

With patience yes, but it is a different technique from building in plastic. You need a sharp knife, tweezers, super glue and ideally a photo-etch bending tool.

Mostly yes. Bare metal has to be degreased and primed, otherwise the paint peels off. Some sets already contain pre-printed color parts.
