A masking set in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Armycast. The sheet holds machine-cut self-adhesive letters and numerals in the American aircraft style. The period height of a character is 8 inches, that is 4.233 mm in 1:48 scale — a figure the maker states in the name of the set itself. These are templates for spraying, not decals and not a kit.
The medium size of the characters covers the typical lettering and numbers on the fuselage and tail surfaces of American aircraft. The text is not sprayed over a film but straight into the finish: no silvering occurs, the glossy edge of a carrier film is absent and the lettering follows the riveting and the engraved panel lines faithfully. A sprayed marking can moreover be weathered, dusted and faded just like the surrounding paint.
Degrease the area and leave it smooth; on a grainy matte coat the edges of the mask do not seal. Transfer the characters with tweezers, line them up against a straight strip of tape stuck on as a guide, and press the edges down with a wooden stick. Spray several thin coats straight down from above and let them dry in between. Lift the mask off soon after it has dried, pulling back over itself at a sharp angle, so that the base coat is not lifted. The sharpness of the edge improves further if the outline is misted with a thin coat of the base color before the character is sprayed — any creeping then stays in the color of the base.
The package holds masking templates only. Paints, varnish and the model are not part of it.
