About product

Aber 1:700 railings for German ships of the Second World War (1st choice)

A photo-etched set from the Polish maker Aber in 1:700 scale with railings for models of German warships of the Second World War period. It is not a kit but a detail accessory. The railings are etched from thin brass sheet, so the stanchions and the railing wires have a realistic thickness once converted to scale — a plastic casting would look like a coarse fence in this scale. The 1st choice designation sets this version of the fret apart from the second variant of the same type of railing in the maker's range.

What the set is for

On real ships the railings run along the edges of the decks, the walkways of the superstructures, the platforms of the rangefinders and the anti-aircraft positions. It is precisely their absence that gives a model away at first glance. The etched strips are cut to the shape of the deck, bent into curves and glued to the edge — and the model gains believability of scale at once. The form follows the railings used on German warships, so it suits battleships, cruisers and the smaller units of the Kriegsmarine alike.

Usage tips

Always try the strip against the deck first and only then cut it. Form the curves around a roller or the handle of a scalpel, and bend sharp corners in a photo-etch bending tool. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue applied with the tip of a wire in short sections, so that you have time to line the railings up. Degrease the brass, spray it with a base coat for metal and paint it the shade of the deck or the superstructures; a deeper shade makes the railings look thinner.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of German warship models in 1:700 scale
  • Modelers whose plastic kit lacks railings
  • Anyone interested in display models with a high level of detail
  • More advanced modelers with experience of photo-etched parts

This is an accessory photo-etched set, not a standalone model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It sets this version of the etched fret apart from the second variant of the same type of railing, which the maker offers separately. Both serve the same purpose.

The form follows German practice, but visually it will serve elsewhere too. For a strictly accurate build it is better to reach for railings of the matching navy.

Around a smooth roller or the handle of a scalpel, slowly and in short sections. Sharp corners are made in a photo-etch bending tool or between two blades.
