The heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen in 1:700 scale as she was at the end of the war, that is, from the time when the ship was supporting ground forces in the Baltic.
Responsibility details are not available.
The third unit of the Admiral Hipper class entered service in August 1940 and was from the start among the best equipped German cruisers. Before she even managed to put to sea on her first operation, a magnetic mine damaged her. In May 1941 she escorted a battleship on her sortie into the Atlantic and was the only one of the pair to come back from that venture.
Months in Brest under constant air raids followed. On the night of 1 to 2 July 1941 a bomb hit the vessel, passed through several decks and knocked out her gunnery systems; Czechoslovak airmen also took part in that raid. In February 1942 the cruiser became famous for her daring dash back through the English Channel to home waters. She spent the rest of the war in the Baltic, shelling targets ashore. After the capitulation the Americans took her over, used her in the atomic tests in the Pacific, and the damaged ship sank off Kwajalein atoll at the end of 1946.
The 1945 form means a great many antiaircraft positions and a worn finish after years of unbroken service. It pays to work with several shades of gray and to keep the differences between them subtle, so that the model does not break up into blotches. The decks call for a wash rather than a dry brush, because in this scale it is easy to end up with an overpainted surface. Anyone who wants the ship in her final form can also add the improvised covers and tarpaulins that crews used at the end of the war. The main turrets are best set so that they do not all point the same way, because a static arrangement looks unnatural in a display case.
