A set of pre-cut painting masks for spraying the camouflage scheme of the British destroyer HMS Kelly as in 1940 onto a model in 1:700 scale. It is not a kit or decals. The masks are there so that the complicated boundary between the color fields can be sprayed sharply, repeatably and without the laborious cutting of tape, which at this scale means hours of work with an uncertain result.
Camouflage schemes of ships have broken shapes that have to be carried symmetrically onto both sides and tied into the superstructures. Hand-cut tape is hard to copy from one side to the other in 1:700 scale, and a small deviation shows on the finished model. A pre-cut mask holds the shape and saves time. Compared with a decal, a sprayed scheme has the advantage that no film or glossy edge is left on the surface and the paint looks uniform on the decks as well as the sides.
Apply the masks over a perfectly dried base coat, not over fresh paint, otherwise the base will come away with them when they are peeled off. Press the edges of the mask down carefully with a toothpick or a blunt tool, as that is exactly where the paint creeps under. Spray in thin coats and, as far as possible, perpendicular to the edge of the mask rather than at an angle under it. Work from the lighter shade to the darker one, so that the less opaque color does not have to fight a dark base. Remove the mask shortly after the paint has dried; after a longer time the adhesive settles and the peeling tends to be rough. Carefully remove any adhesive residue and unify the surface with a final matte clear coat.
The package contains only the painting masks. The model of the ship, the paints and the varnish are not included. The masks are cut to the shape of one specific kit in 1:700 scale and need not fit a model from another manufacturer.
