This item is not a model of the ship but a photo-etched accessory set intended to improve a plastic model of the Japanese battlecruiser Haruna in her original 1915 form, in 1:700 scale. Photo-etched parts are made by chemically etching thin sheet metal, so they reach a thinness and a fineness that cannot be produced in injection-molded plastic. On ship models in 1:700 this is the most effective way to lift the result from the level of a kit to the level of a collector's piece — the plastic substitutes for railings, ladders and gratings are replaced by genuinely thin metal parts.
Photo-etched sets of this kind hold fine elements of the deck fittings and the ship rigging. The exact extent of the fret differs between individual editions; in general these are parts that are either missing from the basic kit or are disproportionately thick for production reasons. The set is tied to the particular form of the ship from 1915, that is to the original configuration as completed, not to the later rebuilt state — this is the key point when buying, because the parts match the layout of the decks and superstructures of that specific version.
Cut the parts from the fret on a hard surface with a sharp scalpel or with special cutters, and never tear them out. Use a photo-etch bender or two steel blades for bending. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue applied in a minimal amount with a needle or a piece of wire — excess glue floods the detail. Degrease the metal before painting and spray it with a thin coat of primer, otherwise the paint holds badly. Railings are best glued on after the deck has been painted, with the length of the part fitted to the actual run of the edge.
