About product

Light cruiser HMS Galatea, 1:700 (Flyhawk)

A plastic kit of the British light cruiser HMS Galatea in 1:700 scale from the manufacturer Flyhawk. It is a model of a smaller warship on which the fineness of the molds shows fully, because at this scale the length of the hull corresponds roughly to the dimension of a larger aircraft model, while the articulation of the superstructures and the armament is incomparably denser. It belongs to the higher class of ship kits, which the expected fineness of the parts and the demands on accurate assembly match.

The real subject

Galatea was one of the British Arethusa-class light cruisers, that is, one of the smaller and faster cruisers built in the first half of the 1930s. The smaller dimensions were intentional: vessels of this size were to escort formations and carry out reconnaissance and escort duties without consuming the tonnage reserved for large ships. The main gun armament consisted of 152 mm guns in turrets, supplemented by anti-aircraft armament and torpedo armament. The ship was in the service of the Royal Navy, and her appearance changed during her service, mainly by the addition of light armament and equipment.

Building and painting tips

With ships in 1:700 scale it holds that the order of the work decides the result. It is more practical to paint the hull and the decks before the superstructures are added, and likewise to prepare the masts and the guns in advance. Lay the paint on thinly, otherwise the engraving of the deck planking and the articulation of the sides will disappear. The difference between the deck and the side of the hull stands out if the shades are left slightly different and the transition is unified only by the final clear coat. Cut the tiny parts off the sprue with a sharp knife and bond them with a minimal amount of glue, as an excess on a small part floods the detail. It is best to add the masts and any bracing only after painting, and at the end to fix the model to a base or into a stand, because the hull on its own is hard to hold and the fine parts break easily under your fingers.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of warships in 1:700 scale.
  • For modelers who want to add smaller escort vessels to their capital ships.
  • For more experienced builders used to very tiny parts.
  • For those interested in British cruisers of the 1930s.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It was a British Arethusa-class light cruiser, that is, a smaller and faster type of cruiser intended for escort and reconnaissance duties.

Rather not. In 1:700 scale the parts are very tiny and the assembly calls for tweezers, a sharp knife and a steady hand.

What decides is the parts list in the instructions enclosed with the kit.

It proves useful to paint the hull and the decks before the superstructures are fitted, and to add the masts and the fine parts only at the end, so that they do not get damaged during handling.
