About product

Type 052C destroyer 1:700 - Trumpeter

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:700 scale, the standard in which most collectors' ship models are made. The maker is the Chinese company Trumpeter, which covers modern Chinese vessels in this scale fairly systematically, a newer type of destroyer among them. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.

The real subject

The Type 052C is a guided missile destroyer of the PLA Navy from the early twenty-first century. It is visually defined by a blocky superstructure with the flat panels of a phased array radar built directly into the walls of the bridge and by vertical missile silos in the forward and after parts of the deck. The silhouette is completed by a gun turret on the bow, funnels in the central part and a helicopter landing area at the stern. We keep the description to the design features that carry over into the model, without judging the vessel's service.

Building and painting tips

In 1:700 scale what decides is fineness, not the amount of work. Cut the parts off the sprue with nippers right at the gate and clean the remainder up with a scalpel; a mast broken off is hard to glue back at this scale. Build the superstructure gradually and keep checking that it is square on a flat surface; a leaning bridge spoils the overall impression more than a missing detail. Apply the paint with an airbrush really thinly, because a heavy coat floods the engraving of the deck. A proven approach is to spray the hull and the superstructure separately and join them only once they are dry. Railings, radar gratings and small cranes always look massive in plastic; photo-etched accessories or finely drawn aerials will take the model markedly further, but they are not part of the package. A very fine wash in the recesses and discreet vertical streaks on the sides of the hull come in handy at the end, so that the ship does not look like one uniform gray block.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of modern warships in the uniform 1:700 scale.
  • Modelers who want to add contemporary Chinese subjects to a collection.
  • Builders with experience of small parts and an appetite for adding etching.
  • Anyone after a shorter project that will not take half a year or a whole display case.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The way the hull is built is given in the manufacturer's instructions. If you plan to set the model into a water surface, check that option in the instructions before starting the build.

The contents of the package are given in the instructions supplied. On 1:700 ships, etching is typically bought separately; railings, radar gratings and ladders take the result furthest.

It is manageable in scope, but the parts are small and call for fine work with tweezers and a sharp knife. As a first ship it is a more demanding choice, though a quicker one than a large scale.

Whether a stand is part of the package is given in the instructions in the box. Models in 1:700 are often displayed on a base bought separately or on a base imitating the water surface.
