The 2S35 Koalitsiya is a Russian self-propelled howitzer of 152 mm caliber. Its long barrel with a muzzle brake, its tall turret and its tracked chassis make it a rewarding model, but one where separating the colors sharply on the cab glazing and on the small optical items tends to be a problem.
The pieces are cut to the shape of the parts of the kit and are stuck onto the areas that are meant to stay in their original color. Spraying follows, and once it has dried the masks are taken off. The paint edge stays sharp and does not run over anywhere. In 1:72 scale that saves the most time, because outlining with a brush is unreliable on parts of this size and one twitch of the hand means repainting the whole part.
The surface under the mask has to be dry and degreased, or the piece will not hold and paint will run under it. Work the edges down with a toothpick all the way round. Spray in thin coats; a heavy coat at the edge leaves a step once it comes off, which then has to be sanded down. Take the mask off shortly after the paint has dried, not several days later, when it comes away less easily.
