A sheet of decals in 1:72 scale from the British manufacturer Xtradecal. It is interesting in that it combines on one sheet two aircraft separated by seven decades of development: the BAe Hawk T.1 jet trainer in its 2008 form and the piston-engined Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I fighter in its 1938 form. The package contains decals only; plastic parts are not part of it.
The BAe Hawk T.1 is a single-engined subsonic aircraft intended for advanced pilot training, with a two-seat cockpit arranged in tandem and a low-set wing. The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I, against it, represents the first production version of the legendary fighter with the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine and the elliptical wing. Setting the two machines side by side is a rewarding subject for a pair of models on a shared base.
In this scale both models have fine engraved structure and rounded transitions, over which a decal has to sit without creases. A decal softener helps: it is laid on a decal that is damp but already settled and left to work. In a moment the film softens, sinks into the engraving and once dry looks as if it had been sprayed on. Never touch a softening decal, though, as it tears easily. With thicker films, use a more aggressive softener in two goes rather than in one large dose.
The product is a decal sheet, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
