1:72 Canopy & Mask for Si 202 (AML)

Canopy and mask for the Siebel Si 202 1:72 — AML

An accessory set from the Czech manufacturer AML for a model of the Siebel Si 202 aircraft in 1:72 scale. It holds a clear canopy and masks for its framing. On an aircraft as small as this the cockpit glazing makes up a substantial part of the whole fuselage, so a clean, well painted canopy decides the look of the whole model more than any other part.

The real subject

The Siebel Si 202 Hummel was a light German sporting aircraft from the end of the 1930s, intended for private flying and basic training. It was a small, simply arranged machine with a modest engine output, and its small dimensions carry over into the model: in 1:72 scale it is a miniature, where every cleanly executed detail stands out.

Building tips

• Never paint the canopy framing freehand with a brush in small scales; masks give the straight lines that a brush will not achieve.
• Degrease the surface of the canopy before the masks go on and press the edges of the masks down carefully.
• Spray thin coats at lower pressure, which reduces the risk of paint bleeding under.
• Lift the masks off with tweezers at a sharp angle shortly after the last coat has dried.

Who the set is for

For builders of less usual German types who want to give their Si 202 a faultless canopy. It will be appreciated by anyone who knows how hard it is to paint fine framing in 1:72 scale without good masks to help.
