About product

Colt M1895 Potato Digger 1:72 — a set of two resin machine guns

An accessory for modelers, not a model. According to the name there are two pieces of the Colt M1895 machine gun in 1:72 scale in the package, cast in resin. The nickname Potato Digger arose from the way the weapon worked: beneath the barrel a gas-operated lever swung as it fired, and when the gun stood low above the ground it literally dug into the soil. It is exactly this lever that makes the Colt an unmistakable weapon in shape, one that a molded plastic part usually simplifies beyond recognition.

The real subject

The Colt M1895 was the first series-built gas-operated machine gun, linked in design to the work of John Browning. It was air-cooled, markedly lighter than the water-cooled weapons of its day, and American units used it from the turn of the century. In the First World War period it served mainly for training and as reserve armament, but it also appeared in early attempts to arm aircraft. Its design line led through further modifications to the better known Marlin aviation machine guns.

Usage and painting tips

The swinging lever and the thin barrel are fragile — release the parts from the casting block with a fine-toothed saw, not with pliers. Before painting, degrease them in warm water with detergent and let them dry thoroughly. A suitable procedure is a dark primer, a steel or graphite shade on the metal parts and a matte black where the weapon is to be blued. Bring any wooden parts the subject has to life with a thin layer of brown and an oil glaze; the contrast of wood and metal does more in this scale than the finest detail.

Who the set is for

  • builders of First World War aircraft and dioramas in 1:72
  • modelers who want to replace plastic weapons simplified in shape
  • more experienced buyers used to resin and cyanoacrylate glue
  • collectors who build models to be looked at from close up

The accessory is supplied unpainted, as resin parts to be finished. Glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. This is a separate accessory — a pair of resin machine guns in 1:72. The base model is bought separately.

Because of the gas-operated lever that swung beneath the barrel as it fired. With the weapon mounted low it tore up the ground, which earned it the nickname of a potato digger.

The thin barrel and the lever will take little. We recommend releasing them with a fine-toothed saw and working with the part over a tray so that any fragment is not lost.
