About product

Percival Proctor Mk.I 1:48 — a Dora Wings kit

An unassembled and unpainted plastic kit in 1:48 scale from the brand Dora Wings. The subject is the Percival Proctor Mk.I, a British single-engine low-wing monoplane used as a liaison aircraft and as a flying classroom for radio telegraphy. According to the name of the box the decal sheet offers four color options; their form and which particular machines they belong to are given by the instructions enclosed in the package.

The real subject

The Proctor was derived from a civilian touring aircraft and its origin is obvious at first glance: an elegant rounded fuselage, a wooden structure and a glazed cabin with a good view. It was powered by an air-cooled inverted inline engine, which gives the nose a characteristic angular profile without a large circular engine cowling. In service the aircraft performed tasks that are not spectacular but are indispensable: carrying people and mail between bases and above all training radio telegraph operators, for which a modified rear part of the cabin served. That is exactly why its color schemes include both ground training and naval aviation. The Mk.I version was the first production form of the type.

Building and painting tips

Short-run molds call for more preparation than mass-production kits. Count on dry-fitting the parts, sanding the seating surfaces and filling the seams with putty. The extensive glazing of the cabin is the key on this type: the frames are best solved with a mask or with narrow strips cut from masking tape, and glue the clear parts with an adhesive intended for clear plastic so that they do not go matte. Finish and paint the cabin before you close the fuselage; with a glazed cabin more is visible than is usual on fighters. Start the painting with a primer, which will at the same time reveal any unfinished seams. Do not simulate the wooden structure of the real thing with a texture on the model, as the surface was covered and varnished, that is smooth. Apply the decals onto a gloss intermediate coat and close the surface at the end with a satin clear coat.

Who the model is for

  • For modelers who have experience of short-run kits and do not mind adjusting the fit.
  • For collectors of British aviation who also want types outside the mainstream of fighters and bombers.
  • For builders who enjoy getting to grips with masking extensive glazing.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The name of the box states four. Their particular form and which individual machines they belong to can be found in the instructions in the package.

Rather for a modeler with some practice. Short-run molds call for dry-fitting the parts, sanding the seating surfaces and filling.

The surest way is masking with narrow strips of masking tape or with a ready-made mask. Glue the clear plastic with an adhesive intended for clear parts; ordinary cement would leave it matte.

Liaison and courier flights and the training of radio telegraph operators. It was not a combat aircraft but a support one.
