This sheet of decals in 1:72 scale from the brand HAD Models is intended for models of the Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter in the F and G versions, that is, machines deployed over Europe. According to the name it offers three camouflage options. It is not a model and not a kit — it is an accessory with which you give a finished model markings other than those in its box. The particular machines, the units and the extent of the accompanying technical lettering are given in the instructions enclosed with the sheet.
The P-38 Lightning was an American twin-engine fighter with an unusual twin-boom layout: two tail booms carried the engines and between them sat a short central nacelle with the pilot and concentrated gun armament in the nose. The placing of the guns on the centerline was a practical advantage — the rounds did not have to be converged on a single point as with wing weapons. The F and G versions belonged to the early series, with a takeoff weight and performance that made the Lightning a long-range machine suited even to long flights over the sea. Its characteristic features are the turbochargers on the upper side of the tail booms and the tricycle landing gear with a nose wheel.
Coat the model with gloss varnish first — a matte surface holds air under a decal and silvering appears. Trim the designs closely, dip them in warm water for a few seconds and let them release only on the paper. Large areas such as invasion stripes or fuselage numbers are better laid on a wet surface, so that you can still move them. On the twin-boom Lightning, watch the transitions between the nacelle and the booms — a setting solution and gently piercing bubbles with a pin will help there. Finally even the surface out with matte varnish.
