A set of soft plastic in 1:72 scale from the manufacturer Strelets-R, devoted to a French sledge train from the Napoleonic period. The numeral one in the name marks the first part of the line, which a continuation follows. It is not a kit of combat hardware, but a diorama set aimed at supply and movement in winter conditions. It is supplied unglued and unpainted.
The train, that is, the supply column, decided whether an army could operate at all. In the winter terrain of Eastern Europe wheeled vehicles became practically unusable and horse-drawn sledges became the substitute, running more easily over packed snow than a wagon on wheels. They carried food, ammunition, fuel and the wounded. For a modeler it is a rewarding theme, because a supply scene gives a diorama a story and at the same time offers something other than a line-up of fighting figures.
A winter diorama stands on its base. Snow is best made from fine white modeling paste or from a powder intended for the purpose, applied in layers and left to dry between them. Press the tracks of the sledges and the hooves into a layer that is still damp, as later it can no longer be done. A white surface must not be pure white, though, otherwise it looks like polystyrene: let very thinned gray and ocher into the tracks and toward the edges, and that creates the impression of snow driven over and trodden down. Paint the wooden parts of the sledges with a dark base and brighten them with a dry brush along the grain. Set the horse harnesses apart with matte brown. Soft plastic is glued only by cyanoacrylate and paint holds on it only after a flexible primer has been applied.
The figures are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
