A resin blinder canopy for instrument flight training on the Japanese Tachikawa Ki-9 trainer biplane, completed with a decal sheet carrying a civil registration. 1:72 scale.

The Tachikawa Ki-9 was one of the mainstays of Imperial Japanese Army Air Force training in the 1930s. It was a simple machine of mixed construction on which pupils gathered their first hours and later moved on to more demanding disciplines. One of them was flight without an outside view: the rear cockpit was covered with a hood, the pupil saw only the instrument panel and the instructor in the second seat watched the space around the airplane.
The accessory brings exactly this covered cockpit as a resin part in a soft top form, that is as fabric stretched over a frame. It is fitted in place of the open rear cockpit of the kit and so turns an ordinary trainer into an airplane ready for instrument flight training. A small printed sheet belongs to the casting as well.
The gate residue is cut off with a fine-toothed saw, the cut surface is leveled with abrasive paper of around 600 grit and degreased before gluing. Resin holds reliably on super glue and any gap is leveled by a drop of acrylic putty. It is worth trying the dry fit before the paint comes, because on biplanes the cutout in the fuselage tends to be sensitive to the shape of the frame.
The printing carries the civil registration of a machine which flew with the aircrew school of the Japanese Ministry of Communications. It is therefore an interesting non-military form of a well-known trainer type. The set assumes a Ki-9 kit in 1:72 scale as the basis of the build.
