Markings for the Junkers Ju 88A-4 in 1:72. Five machines, three of them in Finnish colors, the remaining two of German bomber wings.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Ju 88A-4 was the most widespread form of an aircraft that began as a fast bomber and ended as the basis for night fighters, torpedo carriers and long-range reconnaissance machines. The A-4 subversion was given a lengthened wing, more powerful power units and strengthened landing gear, by which it coped with the growing weight of armament. Lattice dive brakes under the lifting surfaces made an attack in a dive possible, which with a twin-engine machine of that size was not usual. The crew sat together in the glazed nose, an arrangement that improved their cooperation but at the same time meant that a single hit could put them all out of action at once.
The spread of subjects is unusually varied. One German machine was operating over Sicily in 1943 and carried the sand shades meant for the southern theaters; the second served a year earlier in the north in a pair of dark greens with a black underside, of the kind used for night operations. The remaining three aircraft belong to the Finnish Air Force, where the type flew with the same squadron in two of its flights; their finish combines the same upper greens with a light blue underside. The Finnish machines also carry registration markings of their own, which differ entirely from the German codes. Finland obtained machines of this type as a delivery from the production of an allied state and used them until the end of its wartime involvement.
Before applying the markings it is worth considering which of the five paths to take, because each means a different base. Both the German and the Finnish subjects have extensive single-color areas on which the edges of the carrier film easily give themselves away, so a glossy intermediate coat and a final evening out with a matte overcoat are recommended. Anyone building the Finnish variant should check the shape and placement of the national insignia on the wing in advance, because it differs from the German arrangement.
