New Ware mask set – Sea Harrier FRS.1/FA.2, 1:72 (the BASIC level)

A set of precisely cut self-adhesive masks in fine kabuki (washi) tape from the Czech manufacturer New Ware, intended for plastic models of the British carrier-based airplane Sea Harrier in the FRS.1 and FA.2 versions in 1:72 scale. The masks make a crisp and clean separation of the color areas possible without laboriously applying masking tape. It follows the dimensions of the Airfix kit.

What the BASIC level holds

The BASIC level covers the outer surfaces of the cockpit (the canopy), any further transparent parts and the landing gear wheels. The masks follow the shape of the frames exactly, so an airbrush and basic care are all that is needed.

The real subject

The Sea Harrier was a British supersonic carrier-based fighter and attack airplane with vertical takeoff and landing, operated by the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy. The FRS.1 version became famous in the Falklands War of 1982, while the modernized FA.2 received a more capable radar and medium-range guided air-to-air missiles.

Use and tips

• Apply them to a clean, degreased surface and press the edges down carefully.
• Kabuki tape adapts well to the curved surfaces of the glazing.
• Once the finish has dried, take the masks off carefully and in good time.
