This injection-molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale represents the MiG-21R, the reconnaissance version of the famous Soviet supersonic fighter. It is a Czech reissue of an older injection tool from Smer – the kit has a simpler breakdown and less detail than modern tools, which makes it an undemanding build. The box contains plastic parts and a decal sheet with several marking options, including a Czechoslovak one.
The MiG-21 was one of the most widely used supersonic fighters of its day, operated by dozens of air forces around the world. The R version was intended for tactical reconnaissance – it carried reconnaissance pods (with cameras, for example) while retaining the ability to carry armament. Characteristic features of the airframe are the delta wing and the slender fuselage with a circular nose intake and a movable shock cone.
With older tools, reckon on more careful cleaning up of the parts and filling the seams with putty, and possibly restoring the panel lines. Paint the cockpit and the landing gear bays before closing up the fuselage. Even the surface out with a primer; the metal areas of the MiG show to advantage with aluminum shades and subtle panel shading, and an airbrush helps with the soft transitions of camouflage schemes. Glue the reconnaissance pods and accessories on only after the main painting.
