A kit of the British heavy Scammell Pioneer tractor in the R100 version in 1:72 scale from the Polish manufacturer IBG Models. The model comes as an injection-molded plastic kit to assemble and paint. IBG has worked this range of British trucks and special vehicles out to fine detail, which in a small scale means a great many small parts and corresponding demands on patience.
The Scammell Pioneer was a British heavy cross-country tractor with a 6x4 layout that came about in the interwar period and served with the army throughout the Second World War. It was built in several forms: as a recovery vehicle, as a tractor for semi-trailer transporters carrying tanks, and precisely as the R100 artillery tractor. The latter carried the crew and ammunition and towed heavy artillery where an ordinary truck could not get through. Characteristic is its rear suspension with walking beams, thanks to which the wheels had exceptional travel and the vehicle coped even with very broken ground.
Build and paint the chassis and the suspension before you close the cargo bed and the cab - once they are glued you can no longer reach them. Leave small parts on the sprue as long as possible, separate them with a sharp cutter or nippers and clean them up with a file rather than blindly with a scalpel. Use a thin cement for plastic that wicks into the joint. Lay on a primer before painting, which suits the khaki and brown shades of British vehicles better than bare plastic. Weather sparingly: a dark wash into the pressings, a dry brush on the edges and fine dust pigments on the underside of the chassis and the wheels.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
