This MH models set is not intended for the glazing but for the national insignia. It contains pre-cut masks for the British roundels for a model of the Short Sunderland Mk.V flying boat in 1:72 scale. Sprayed insignia have one fundamental advantage over decals: they have no carrier film, they do not shine and on the large-area fuselage of a flying boat they do not have to be laboriously settled over riveting and overlapping plates. The paint also ages and weathers just like the surrounding areas. The sizes of the roundels match the fuselage and wings of the Special Hobby kit.
The Short Sunderland was a British four-engine flying boat that formed the backbone of long-range patrol flights over the ocean during the Second World War. The Mk.V version differs from the earlier machines mainly in a different power plant, as American engines replaced the original radial engines, which improved performance on long patrols. The hull had the form of a real boat with a pronounced step on the bottom and a roomy two-deck interior. A model of this type therefore has large continuous areas on which every insignia stands out.
The surface must be smooth and perfectly dry, as otherwise a mask will not settle and paint will run underneath. Lay the mask down, center it and press the edges down thoroughly. Spray the individual colors of the roundel in turn from the lightest to the darkest and let the paint set between layers. Apply it thinly, because a heavy coat creates a step at the edge. Remove the masks while the finish has not fully cured.
