A package of accessories for one particular kit of the battleship USS Missouri in 1:700 scale. According to the name it includes a veneer deck with a self-adhesive backing, a masking sheet and photo-etched parts. The ship model is not part of it. Please check that you have exactly the kit the set is cut for. The set is intended for the Tamiya 31613 kit.
A veneer deck looks good even straight after it has been glued on, but the real difference is made by the surface finish. Before installation the wood can be pulled into a warmer or grayer tone with a very thinned stain or oil paint, depending on which phase of the life of the ship you want to show. Always work on a test offcut, as the veneer is thin and an excess of moisture will make it ripple. Once it is glued on it pays to seal the surface with a matte or satin clear coat in two thin layers; this evens out the sheen and the deck stops picking up grease from the fingers.
Once the deck is varnished, you can carefully use a very thin dark wash, which flows into the grooves between the planks and picks the laying out. Pull the excess away with a cotton swab drawn in the direction of the planks, never across them. Less is definitely more here, as an excess of wash turns light wood into a gray area. Fit the photo-etched parts from the set at the very end, once the deck is finished.
