An injection-molded plastic kit of the British single-seat Supermarine Spitfire fighter in the Mk.Vb version in tropical trim, in 1:72 scale from the manufacturer Mistercraft. It is an undemanding kit that suits filling out a collection of Spitfire versions, practicing procedures, or as a model on which there is no problem trying out new painting techniques.
The Spitfire Mk.V was the most numerously produced version of the type. It was powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine of the 45 series and differed from the earlier versions mainly in power and armament. The Mk.Vb designation refers to the B type wing, which combined two 20 mm cannon with 7.7 mm machine guns. The abbreviation Trop means the tropical trim for operation in a dusty environment. The aircraft was given a bulky intake air filter under the nose, which protected the engine from sand and dust, and additional equipment for operation outside the ordinary network of airfields. The filter reduced the flying performance a little, but it substantially extended the life of the engine. It is precisely the prominent filter housing under the nose that is the shape feature by which tropical machines are recognized at first glance.
In 1:72 scale a thin coat of paint is the key thing, as a heavy finish floods the fine engraving of the panels. Paint the cockpit before closing the fuselage and mask the canopy, because a brush by hand is hard to control on the frames at this scale. The joint of the filter housing under the nose deserves careful cleanup, as it is in a place on view. With older molds, reckon on removing flash, filling the joints if necessary, and on the fact that it is better to try the seating of the parts dry first. Apply the decals over a gloss clear coat, otherwise a white haze will appear under them, and at the end unify the surface with a matte varnish.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
