A set of foot figures in 1:72 scale aimed at Union soldiers in standing poses. It is made by the firm Strelets, which has long devoted itself to figures from the American Civil War and from the nineteenth century in general. The castings are of soft plastic of a uniform color and come unpainted and unassembled. The static poses make the set a suitable basis for a formation, a camp or a quieter part of a diorama.
The Union infantry formed the backbone of the field armies during the American Civil War. The battle formation of the time still rested on close ranks and on the fire of a whole unit, so the soldiers spent a large part of the day in formation, in place and waiting. It is precisely this state, that is, a unit standing and ready, that the set captures, and it complements the more common sets aimed at attack or at firing.
Standing figures are the easiest of all to paint, because they have a stable stance and well accessible surfaces. It pays to make use of that and to run the whole set through in one series: wash, prime, lay the base blue tone of the uniform, then a dark wash into the folds and finally a lighter tone on the edges with a dry brush. Set the leather straps and the pouches apart with brown and a darker leather, and the metal parts of the rifle and the bayonet with a steel color applied with an almost dry brush. Because the figures look very similar in formation, a small irregularity will give the scene life, that is, slightly different shades of trousers and differently dusty boots. Fix the finished figures with matte clear, which at the same time evens out the sheen of the various colors.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
