About product

Wasserfall on a railroad car 1:72 (Modelcollect)

An injection molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale from the manufacturer Modelcollect. The subject is the German guided anti-aircraft missile Wasserfall of the Second World War period mounted on a railroad car, that is, on a rail carrier that served for moving and preparing the bulky missile assembly. The model joins two different assemblies into one scene: the slim body of the missile with its wings and the broken-up car with its running gear, platform and handling fittings. It is not a finished model or a collector's piece; the parts are supplied on sprues and have to be separated, cleaned, glued and painted.

The real subject

The Wasserfall was a liquid-fueled guided anti-aircraft missile developed in Germany in the second half of the war as a means of defense against high-altitude bomber formations. In design it followed on from the layout of the A-4 rocket, but it was markedly smaller and had lifting surfaces added that allowed guided flight; the guidance was handled by a ground station. The program never reached combat use and ended at the stage of test launches. Moving bulky missile and artillery systems by rail was common at that time, because the rail network could bear the weight and the length that road transport managed only with difficulty.

Building and painting tips

Glue with a thin cement for polystyrene applied into the joints by capillary action, and on the small handling parts cyanoacrylate glue helps. Assemble and base-paint the running gear and the frame of the car before you close the platform up, because afterwards you can no longer reach the lower parts. Spray the whole model with a filler primer; only on that does it show where the joints need more sanding. Deal with the body of the missile and with the car differently: the smooth areas of the missile take a sharp division of colors with masking tape, while on the broken-up car a dark wash into the recesses, wear on the edges and a fine dust pigment on the running gear all sit well. Leave rust and oil traces only in places where they make technical sense, otherwise the model looks artificial.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers with experience of building military subjects in a small scale.
  • Collectors of missile and launch systems in 1:72.
  • Builders of dioramas with rail subjects, where the car forms a natural basis for the scene.
  • Anyone interested in the development projects of the end of the Second World War that never reached use.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a kit in injection molded plastic. The parts have to be separated from the sprues, cleaned, glued and painted; neither glue nor paints are included in the package.

According to the name it is a combination of the Wasserfall missile and its rail carrier. The exact make-up of the sprues and the number of parts are given in the manufacturer's instructions.

Rather for a modeler who has already built military subjects in a small scale. The small parts of the running gear and the handling fittings call for calm and a sharp knife.

Yes, a rail carrier is a natural basis for a diorama. It is enough to add a section of track and simple terrain and the scene holds together by itself.
