The Yak-20 in 1:72 scale from Avis is a plastic kit of the little-known Soviet trainer of the late 1940s.
Responsibility details are not available.
The kit covers the Yak-20, a postwar trainer from the Yakovlev design bureau. It is one of the types that do not make it into the ordinary range of the large manufacturers, and it is precisely such marginal machines that Avis focuses on. For a small trainer 1:72 scale is ideal: the finished model takes up a minimum of shelf space and pairs well with other Soviet types of the same era.
The Yak-20 appeared at the turn of the 1940s and 1950s as a simple two-seat machine for basic pilot training. In design it followed the practice of the Yakovlev bureau of the day: a piston engine, fixed landing gear and an undemanding, repairable structure that could stand operation from grass strips and in the hands of beginning pilots. The type never spread as widely as the more famous Yak-18, which makes it all the more interesting as a modeling subject.
With shorter production runs it always pays to try the parts dry before you reach for the glue. Check the mating surfaces of the fuselage halves and the wing, level out any unevenness by sanding and fill the seams. Glue with thin cement for plastic drawn into the seam by capillary action, and use super glue on small parts and on any extras in another material. Mask the cockpit glazing and glue it only after the main painting. Coat the model with gloss clear coat before the decals and flatten it once they have dried. Training machines tended to be well maintained, so do not overdo heavy soiling; light wear at the walkways and traces of exhaust gases are enough.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
