About product

Mantlet and KwK 40 L/48 barrel for the Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. H/J, 1:35 scale — PANZER ART

A detail set in 1:35 scale from PANZER ART for a plastic kit of the Pz.Kpfw. IV medium tank in the Ausf. H and Ausf. J versions. It holds the mantlet of the armament and a turned barrel of the 7.5 cm KwK 40 gun with a length of 48 calibers, made with the mid muzzle brake. It is not a vehicle kit, but replacement parts for making the model more accurate.

Why the type of muzzle brake decides

The muzzle brake of the KwK 40 gun was simplified during production and its shape is one of the most prominent features telling the individual production periods apart. The manufacturer therefore makes variants with the early, the mid and the later brake as separate items. For a model of a particular vehicle it is necessary to pick the one matching the production batch being built.

The real subject

The Pz.Kpfw. IV was the most widespread German medium tank of the Second World War. The Ausf. H and Ausf. J versions represent late production stages, on which the original short gun had long been replaced by the long 7.5 cm weapon with a barrel length of 48 calibers. The Ausf. J meant a further simplification of manufacture over the Ausf. H. It is the long barrel with the muzzle brake that gives these versions their characteristic silhouette.

Building and painting tips

Check dry that the mantlet sits into the turret front and that the barrel stays in the horizontal axis. Degrease the turned surface before painting and use primer, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth part. The muzzle brake is the place where wear shows most, so once painted, pick it out with a dry brush in a dark steel shade and darken the muzzle. The root of the barrel tends to be dustier than the rest of the vehicle, which can be suggested with dust pigment. Work a dark wash into the transition from the mantlet to the turret.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. H or Ausf. J in 1:35
  • Modelers bothered by a lengthwise seam on a plastic barrel
  • Anyone after a faithful distinction of production batches by the muzzle brake
  • Diorama builders with the vehicle in the foreground of a scene

The set is supplied unpainted, as an accessory to a plastic kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The shape of the muzzle brake of the KwK 40 gun changed during production. The mid type stands between the early and the final form, and the variant matching the production batch of your vehicle is chosen by it.

According to the name it is made for both versions, and the gun mounting of the Ausf. H and the Ausf. J does not differ enough to call for two separate sets.

No. The set holds the mantlet and the barrel as a replacement for the plastic parts. The base kit in 1:35 scale has to be obtained separately.

Yes, degrease it and apply a primer suitable for a smooth surface. Without that, the paint rubs off the turned part during handling, especially on the edges of the muzzle brake.
