The bust captures a French cuirassier, and the year 1815 in the name links it with the closing campaign of the Napoleonic wars. The 1:10 scale is part of the name, and the format allows the cuirass, the helmet and the straps to be worked out in detail.
The cuirassiers made up the heavy cavalry, whose task was the decisive blow into a shaken enemy formation. The mark of recognition was a steel cuirass of a front and a back piece and a helmet with a crest over which a horsehair plume flowed. In 1815 France committed these regiments in the Belgian campaign, where their repeated charges against infantry squares belong among the most quoted episodes of the whole period. Both the weight of the equipment and the price of the horses meant that it was an expensive kind of troops, which could not be replaced quickly.
The steel of the cuirass and the brass edging stand side by side, so the difference between cool and warm metal decides the whole impression. Paint the plume strand by strand with a dark base at the root, otherwise it will look like a single piece. The straps across the chest are best led a little lighter than the uniform, so that they lift away from it. A sharper division of the light suits the face, because the helmet casts a pronounced shadow across the forehead and the eyes.
