A grit of two hundred and forty belongs among the finer ones used in a modeling workshop. It does not take material away quickly, but it leaves behind a surface that only needs a short polish and is then ready under a primer. That is precisely why this set suits the second phase of the work, once the rough shape is finished and the point is to get rid of the scratches left by coarser tools.
There are five profiles in the package, each of which deals with a different situation. The flat one copes with large straight areas and outer edges, the square one gets into a right-angled corner, the triangular one into a sharper angle, the half-round one levels a concave area and the round one works over a hole or a groove. Together they cover practically every shape that occurs on a plastic or resin part.
The abrasive surface quickly clogs with the dust taken off and stops working. It helps to tap it out or brush it out with an old toothbrush now and then, or else to sand wet, which suppresses the dust at the same time. The pressure should be moderate and the stroke led in one direction, because a movement led back and forth rounds off the edge a modeler usually has an interest in keeping sharp.
On softer resin and on thin photo-etched parts a finer grit suits better than a coarse one, because there is no risk of the material tearing through or of more being taken off than was planned. It is also useful that a fine surface leaves no deep scratches on clear parts that could not then be polished out; on canopies and headlights that is the difference between a part that can be saved and one that is ruined.
