The set contains pre-cut kabuki paper masks for the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter in the Block II version in 1:48 scale. The designation BASIC is the lowest of the three levels the manufacturer offers for this machine; ADVANCE and EXPERT versions are made as well. It is not a kit but an aid for painting a model that has already been built.
The glazing of the Apache is intricate and the frames are not just straight lines. Tracing them by hand with a brush almost always ends in an uneven frame width and a shaky edge, while cutting tape by hand costs hours of work and inaccuracies still arise on the curves. A cut mask sits on the shape of the part and, once sprayed, gives an evenly wide frame with a sharp transition, which shows most at a small scale. Kabuki paper is thin, holds its shape even over a slight curve and has a weak adhesive, so it can be lifted and laid down again without pulling the base off.
Wash the glazing before masking and let it dry completely; grease from your fingers is the most common cause of paint running under. Lift the mask off the sheet with a sharp point or tweezers, lay it down dry and press the edges home properly with a toothpick, as it is at the edge that running under happens. Spray in several very thin coats, and the first of them can safely be in the interior color so that any bleed does not show. Lift the mask as soon as the paint has flashed off, not after it has fully cured, or the finish may tear at the edge. Wipe any adhesive residue off with a cotton swab moistened with water or spirit, never with an aggressive thinner.
The set is an accessory for a plastic model. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
