A plastic kit of a special for running on sand in 1:25 scale from the American brand AMT. It joins two subjects that belong together in American car culture: the lightened construction of a drag racing special and a build intended for sand dunes. The model is intended to be glued and painted. Check the particular number of parts, the makeup of the decals and the dimensions of the finished model on the packaging.
Cars for running in the dunes were built by enthusiasts on a light frame with exposed machinery, a minimum of body and with wheels whose rear pair carries wide tires with a coarse tread for grip on a loose surface. At the front, by contrast, narrow wheels were used, which do not push a ridge of sand ahead of them. The result was unmistakable shapes somewhere between a racing special and a beach buggy.
With kits of this type the lightened frames have thin parts, so separate them with sprue nippers and clean them up with a file, not by twisting. Glue with thin polystyrene cement. The engine and the drivetrain stay visible, so it pays to paint them separately and to pick out the metal surfaces. Paint the body over a filler primer, with rich shades over a white base. A vehicle for the sand will bear discreet weathering too: a light dust pigment applied to the wheels and the underside of the model suggests the setting at once, but there is no need to overdo it, or the gloss of the finish will be lost.
