An injection-molded plastic kit of the legendary Formula 1 car in the giant 1:12 scale. The finished model measures 345 mm long, 170 mm wide and 70 mm high, which is a display case piece, not a trifle for a shelf. The car is rendered in the specification of the 1971 Monaco Grand Prix with the characteristic flat T-shaped nose, which was nicknamed the hammer head. The package contains photo-etched parts (brake discs, elements of the radiator, the clasps and buckles of the seat belts), metal parts for the stems of the mirrors and quality printed decals. The steering wheel turns the front wheels, the body and the nose are removable and can be displayed on the stand supplied, and the front and rear suspension is working with coil springs. The Ford Cosworth DFV engine is worked out including the routing of the hoses and the wiring.
The Tyrrell 003 is the car with which Jackie Stewart won the Formula 1 world championship in 1971, one of his three title seasons. Stewart ranks among the greatest legends of the sport not only for his results: at a time when drivers were dying practically every season, he became a vocal campaigner for safety, for barriers, medical readiness at the track and the use of seat belts. The car was powered by the classic Ford Cosworth DFV eight-cylinder engine, the engine that defined a whole era of Formula 1.
A Formula car is a different discipline from a military model. The body has to be absolutely smooth and glossy; the dark blue of the Tyrrell is sprayed gloss and polished, and gloss shows up every mistake without mercy: every visible joint, every scratch from coarse sanding, every speck of dust. Nothing hides under a wash or under pigments. Work therefore in a clean space, spray thin coats and check the surface against the light between them. The sponsor decals are the main part of the work and in this scale they are large; they have to settle onto the curved surfaces of the body and the nose, so a decal softener is practically a necessity. Once dry, a clear coat over the decals is usually applied and the surface is polished; the edge of the decal disappears and the model takes on the wet look of a real Formula car. Glue the photo-etched parts with cyanoacrylate, not with plastic cement. The engine, the gearbox and the suspension, on the contrary, take fine highlighting in metal shades and restrained shading; unlike the body, detail stands out there.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
