This kit from the German brand Revell brings the quarter-liter class Yamaha DT-1 in 1:12 scale. That scale is the most rewarding one for motorcycles: the model has enough size for the frame, the engine and the spoked wheels to come into their own, and it still fits in an ordinary display case. A motorcycle with an open structure, where almost nothing is hidden under bodywork, is also an ideal subject for anyone who wants to play with detail.
The Yamaha DT-1 is an off-road single-cylinder machine with a two-stroke engine of the quarter-liter class that appeared at the end of the 1960s. It is often called the motorcycle that opened up the category of mass-produced off-road machines usable on the road as well: it combined a light tube frame, a high-routed exhaust and running gear with the travel for riding off hard surfaces. It is precisely this simple, honestly exposed engineering that makes it a rewarding object for a model.
With a motorcycle it pays to build in groups: finish and paint the engine first, then the frame, and only then join them. Spray the frame before you glue anything to it, as you will not reach it later. The tank and the fenders deserve gloss varnish and a proper polish; at a large scale every unevenness shows, so sanding between coats pays off. Do not sand the chromed parts, just clean the spot where you glue. Apply the decals to a glossy base and fix them with a final varnish. Finish the spokes of the wheels with a dark wash so that they come out.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
