In the last phase of the war the Martin B-26 medium bombers moved from English airfields to the continent, so as to keep up with the advance of the ground units. Crews marked their aircraft with names that were sometimes charming and sometimes thoroughly rough, and it is those that have survived in unit photographs.
The set captures four machines, each from a different stage of the deployment:
The span of dates here is unusually wide: from the summer of 1943, when the type was still gathering experience over the Channel, to January 1945 and operations from French airfields. Anyone building a series gets three different chapters of the story of one group in a single package.
It is worth mentioning that a name on the nose was not merely decoration in the US Army Air Forces. It was a way for a crew to make its own a machine that otherwise belonged to the unit and could pass to another crew at any time. That is why the artwork often survived even after the original crew had flown its tally of missions.
Working with the sheet follows the usual procedure for small scales. First go over the surface with a gloss layer, let the marking float off the paper and slide it up with a brush. The lettering on the fuselage is long and narrow, so settle it in one piece and straighten it on the model while the film is still pliable.
