A decal sheet from the brand Caracal Models for plastic models of the American transport and tanker aircraft Boeing C-97 and KC-97 Stratofreighter in 1:144 scale. The sheet contains markings for the machines given by the manufacturer on the packaging; the particular number of schemes, the units and the serial numbers you will find on the packaging and in the instructions supplied. The Boeing C-97 Stratofreighter is an American four-engined transport aircraft with piston engines, derived from a heavy bomber and recognizable by its characteristic double-deck fuselage. The KC-97 tanker version carried fuel tanks and a telescoping rigid refueling boom; it served to replenish fuel in flight at a time when jet aircraft had already markedly outstripped the possibilities of a piston tanker. The type was operated in the transport, tanker and auxiliary role and in later years, particularly with the reserve components, it saw a long service.
In 1:144 scale a large part of the sheet consists of small lettering, with which the difference between a successful and an unsuccessful application is recognized at once. The base therefore has to be truly glossy: on matte paint air is trapped under the thin film and the decal goes gray. Cut the sheet as close to the printing as possible, with microscopic lettering preferably one piece at a time. Carry them to the water on the tip of a brush or with flat-jawed tweezers, not with your fingers; a small decal is easily crumpled and will not straighten out again. Let them soak only briefly and carry them, together with the backing paper, straight to the place where they are to settle. Apply the softener in moderation and do not touch the decal once it is on until it has dried. At the end, coat the whole model with a matte or semi-gloss varnish according to the nature of the coloring, so that the intermediate gloss clear coat disappears.
