About product

Kit 1:144 P-39 Airacobra Red Stars (Brengun)

A plastic kit of the Bell P-39 Airacobra fighter in 1:144 scale. The Red Stars edition is aimed at machines in service with the Soviet Air Force. It is a complete model of an aircraft, not an accessory set. Brengun also carries further Airacobra boxes in the same scale with other versions and markings, so go by the exact wording of the name when choosing.

The real subject

The P-39 Airacobra was an American single-seat fighter with an unusual layout: the engine sat behind the pilot, in the middle of the fuselage, and drove the propeller through a long shaft run beneath the cockpit. The nose thus freed up allowed the armament to be placed on the axis of the machine and nose landing gear to be carried at a time when it was still rare on fighters. Access to the cockpit was by side doors like a car's. The aircraft reached the Soviet Air Force in considerable numbers, where it was used above all at low and medium altitudes.

Building and painting tips

The 1:144 scale means a model that fits in the palm and a build in which cleanness of work decides, not the number of parts. Apply the glue with a bristle in drops rather than from the tube; an excess in this scale floods engraving you will never get back. Fill and sand the seams straight away, as later you will struggle to reach them between the wing and the fuselage. Spray the paint in very thin coats and apply the primer almost translucently. Mask the canopy accurately; in a small scale the glazing is exactly what draws the eye. Lay the decals on a gloss base and fix them with a softener, otherwise they will not settle on tiny areas.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors building an aircraft collection in a uniform small scale.
  • Modelers with limited room in a display case.
  • Those interested in the Airacobra and its unconventional design.
  • Builders who want a quicker project between two large models.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is the name of a particular edition aimed at machines in service with the Soviet Air Force. You will find the exact contents of the decal sheet in the instructions to the kit.

Yes, the manufacturer carries further Airacobra boxes in the same scale with different versions. They are told apart by the exact wording of the name.

The build is short but it overlooks no mistakes. A small scale calls for thin coats of paint and glue applied in drops.

It had the engine behind the pilot in the middle of the fuselage and drove the propeller through a long shaft. Entry to the cockpit was by side doors.
