An injection-molded plastic kit of the British Sopwith F.1 Camel fighter biplane in 1:144 scale from the Czech manufacturer Valom. The boxing is listed as a double set, so you will find two complete models in the box and can build a pair of machines in different markings. Photo-etched parts for the finest detail and decals are included as well. The small scale makes the Camel a tiny model that takes up no room in a display case, but it also calls for a steady hand.
The Sopwith Camel is among the best known fighters of the First World War. It entered service in 1917 and became one of the most widespread British fighter types of the closing stage of the war. It was a single-seat biplane with a rotary engine in which most of the mass was concentrated in the short forward fuselage. That made it exceptionally agile, but it also called for an experienced pilot. The characteristic fairing over the forward fuselage, under which the armament was housed, gave the aircraft its nickname.
In 1:144 scale most of the parts are very small, so work over a surface with a light-colored background and cut the parts off with a sharp scalpel rather than with cutters. Glue the interplane struts one at a time and let them set before you fit the upper wing. Very fine fiber or stretched sprue suits the rigging between the wings, but in this scale it is entirely legitimate to leave it out. The fabric-covered surfaces are painted in matte linen shades and completed with a faint dark tint along the ribs. Varnish the area with gloss clear coat before the decals, and once they have dried unify it with a matte coat.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
