This add-on set from Armory is made for models of the SR-71A Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft in 1:144 and matches the early type of wheel. A resin casting allows a finer tread and sidewall pattern than is attainable on an injection-molded part that small. The tires have sag cast in, so the finished model looks as though the weight of the aircraft really rests on the wheels. The set is an add-on, not an aircraft kit.
The SR-71A Blackbird is an American strategic reconnaissance aircraft designed for long flights at high supersonic speed and great altitude. Its aerodynamic shape, the extensive use of titanium and the extreme thermal loads on the structure made it one of the technically most remarkable aircraft of the Cold War. The high landing speed and the weight placed exceptional demands on the landing gear and the tires as well, and changes came in during service, which is why an early and a later type of wheel are told apart.
The parts are small in 1:144, so work with tweezers over a light surface. Cut the casting block off with a fine saw, sand the cut and try the contact patch against a flat board so that the model stands level. Wash the castings in warm water with dish soap before painting and let them dry. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue; cement for plastic will not help here. Paint the tire dark gray rather than pure black and flatten the surface down. On a black-painted airframe the contrast between the wheels and the fuselage tends to be subtle, so do not overdo the shades and handle the difference through the degree of sheen rather than a marked change of color. Careful brushwork is enough for the hub. Use airway protection when sanding resin.
This is an add-on to a plastic kit, not a model in its own right. The set is supplied unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
