Strips of the dark wood manzonia, 2 x 4 x 1000 mm, 10 pieces

The pack holds ten strips with a section of 2 x 4 mm and a length of 1000 mm. A flat section is the typical material for facing: it is used for deck planks, for bands of hull facing, for edging and for surfaces where the grain of the wood is to show. The dark shade of manzonia proves itself where facing is to be set apart from paler parts, that is for instance on alternating bands or on the edging of deck openings.

Working with the wood

You shorten the strips with a sharp scalpel; for larger runs a fine saw with a guide groove is more convenient, because all the pieces come out the same. Facing is bonded with PVA wood glue; apply it in a thin layer and press the strips down until the glue starts to grab. Around the rounded parts of a hull a flat strip can be bent after moistening or steaming, or else after cutting grooves on the back. Once finished, sand the surface with fine paper along the grain, and only then let the surface be finished, so that the varnish does not pull dust into it. Chamfering the edges of the strips helps to bring out the seams between the planks.
