Sapelly 3x3x1000 mm is a pack of ten strips of square section in dark brown African wood, structural material for the railings, frames and braces of ship models.

The package contains ten strips of square section 3x3 mm and one meter long. A square profile is not laid over a surface like planking; things are built from it, and it makes edges, frames and load-bearing features. Sapelly is an African hardwood of mahogany character with a dark brown tone and a striped figure, so that even a small part made from it looks handsome and needs no staining.
Repeated cuts of the same length come out well from a strip: set up a simple stop, otherwise the railing stanchions drift apart after just a few pieces. Sapelly is hard and takes a file and a sanding sponge; watch only for rising grain, where the surface lifts when sanded against the direction, and simply turn the direction of the stroke. Bond the structure with PVA wood glue, and for quick joints cyanoacrylate will serve. Wipe off the excess glue at once, because a dried patch takes varnish differently from its surroundings and shows clearly on dark wood. Soften the edges with a few passes of fine paper, and the part will not look carved. Finally a matte varnish, wax or oil.

The strips are supplied in their natural state, unworked and with no surface finish. Glue, abrasives and varnish are not included.
