Tamiya 12625 German rank markings is a decal sheet for figures in 1:16 and 1:35 scale – ranks, badges and insignia of the German army of the Second World War.

A sheet of waterslide decals that adds to figures what is hardest to paint with a brush: rank collar patches, badges, insignia and small details of the uniform. The sheet carries motifs in two sizes, for figures in 1:16 as well as 1:35 scale, so a single sheet covers a large and a small build alike. Alongside the ranks of enlisted men and officers there are also markings and badges for the Afrika Korps, the field gendarmerie and Waffen-SS units.
The base must be smooth and glossy, otherwise air will stay under the decal and a matte frame will form around its edge. On a painted figure, therefore, first apply a gloss varnish, seat the decal and matte it down once dry. On figures the surfaces are curved and have folds, so a softener that pulls the decal into the shape of the cloth pays off. Cut the motif as close as possible, so that the carrier film does not stick out.
For figure modelers who want accurate, legible markings without painting small devices, and for builders of dioramas where there are more characters and hand painting would take disproportionately long. It serves equally well in a large scale, where the markings are clearly visible, as in a small one, where they could not be created with a brush at all.
The decals are applied with water and with varnishes; ventilate while working and store the material out of the reach of children.
