The 1:16 scale means a large and finely detailed model: the finished tank is markedly bigger than the usual kit in 1:35 and it rewards careful work with weathering.
The M5A1 was a late development form of the American Stuart line of light tanks. It differed from the older versions mainly in its powerplant: instead of a radial aircraft engine it received a pair of automobile V8s with an automatic transmission, thanks to which it was easier to drive and easier to maintain. The turret was reworked and carried a 37 mm gun complemented by machine gun armament. The British Army, which took American tanks over under names of its own, designated the M5A1 as the Stuart VI. In the second half of the war a light tank was no longer enough against armored targets and it was used mainly for reconnaissance, liaison and escort, and it is in exactly this role that it is most often depicted.
A large scale reveals every inaccuracy, so try the parts dry and sand the joints carefully. Assemble and paint the running gear and everything that will be poorly accessible after assembly before the hull is closed up. Spray the model with a filling primer and only then apply the base shade, and lighten the paint on the upper surfaces, so that a large area does not look flat. Rivets, hatches and engraved detail are brought out by a dark flowing wash, and the running gear and the fenders by dust pigments and mud effects. In a large scale even small things show, such as worn edges, boot marks on the fenders or the crew's stowed kit.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
