About product

The French helmet M15 in 1:16 scale

This is an accessory for a figure in the large 1:16 scale. It replaces neither a figure nor a kit. It contains the helmet on its own, which you put on a figure's head, lay beside it on the ground, on a crate or on propped-up equipment. It is precisely such small things that make a scene believable, because a soldier does not have his helmet on all the time.

The real subject

The M15 helmet is the French steel helmet commonly called the Adrian. You will recognize it at first glance by the shallow spherical shell, the crest fitted over the crown and the flanged rim with a short peak at the front and the rear. A number of other armies used it in various modifications and it lasted in service for decades, so it suits figures of the First as well as the Second World War and interwar scenes.

Fitting, cleaning up and painting

First separate the part from the casting residue with a fine saw or a snap-off knife and sand the surface of the cut level. Then wash it in lukewarm water with a detergent and let it dry; on resin castings that removes residues of the release agent, on which the paint would not hold. It is glued with super glue, and a gel variant with an activator will give you a moment to even it up before the joint sets. Go over the surface with a primer before painting. In 1:16 scale literally every detail is visible, so it pays off to set the shell apart from the chin strap and from the inner liner, to add a wash into the rim and around the crest and to accentuate the edges gently with a dry brush. Finally, close it with a matte varnish.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who build large 1:16 figures and want to complete or replace their headgear
  • Builders of dioramas where a helmet is meant to lie away from a figure
  • Conversions and the unification of equipment across several figures
  • Practice in painting metal and leather surfaces on a small area

The accessory is supplied unpainted and without a figure. Glue, paints and the figure are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a separate accessory for a figure, that is a helmet which you fit onto a figure yourself. A figure is not included in the package.

With a cyanoacrylate-based super glue. It holds on resin and on plastic, and a gel variant moreover gives more time to seat the part.

Cut the casting residue off, sand the surface down, wash the part in lukewarm water with a detergent and go over it with a primer. Without a primer the paint holds badly on a smooth surface.

A helmet of this type was used outside the French army as well and it lasted in service for decades. Judge the particular allocation, though, by the rest of the figure's equipment.
