An extensive plastic kit of the German Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. J medium tank in 1:16 scale from Trumpeter. Over 2000 parts, a metal gun barrel, a full interior with the engine and individual track links.
Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit of the last production Panzer IV in 1:16 scale. It is one of the most extensive tank kits there is: over 2000 parts, a full interior of the hull and the turret including the engine and transmission, the radio, ammunition bins and four types of round, individual track links, wire side Schurzen, optionally a plastic or a metal gun barrel, photo-etched parts, clear parts and a tow cable of wire. The finished model measures roughly 439 x 208 mm. That means one thing: measure your display case before you open the box, and count on the build taking months, not weekends.
The Panzer IV was the workhorse of the German armored forces throughout the war. The Ausf. J was the last and most simplified version, produced from 1944 until the end of the war. The simplifications went to the bone: because of a shortage of raw materials the auxiliary generator for electric turret traverse was deleted and from then on the turret was traversed by hand only, which made the crew's work markedly harder. The space freed up was given to an additional fuel tank, so the range increased. Other details fell away too: simplified exhausts, fewer return rollers on later batches, and lighter wire Schurzen instead of solid side plates. The Ausf. J is thus a vivid story of a wartime economy in the closing stage of the conflict.
Deal with the interior and the running gear first; once the hull is closed you will not reach the engine or the transmission. Decide in advance what you will leave visible: an open engine compartment and open hatches are the main reason for buying a kit like this in this scale. Glue with a thin cement for plastic, and fill and sand carefully, because in 1:16 an unsanded seam is visible from a meter away and a primer will give it away reliably. Degrease the metal gun barrel before gluing and use a metal primer. Paint with an airbrush: base, lightening, then the camouflage. The wire Schurzen deserve separate painting and chipped edges. At the end, washes, dust and mud pigments on the running gear, as a large area will take even bolder weathering; just build it up in thin layers.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
