Dark shades are worked with differently on a model from light ones. Taking them away once dry is practically impossible, while adding can be done at any time, so the sensible way is to start carefully and to build the strength of the tone up only according to how the area looks. If you are not sure how much paint an area will take, start on a less conspicuous place on the model.
The second thing is light. A dark area looks different under a bench lamp than by a window and different again in a photograph with flash. Keep checking work under way in different lighting and, above all, look at the model from a distance rather than only close up over the bench. A detail that looks like exaggerated contrast close up may be barely noticeable from a normal viewing distance, and the other way round. Dark areas also optically take volume away, so the boundary between a dark and a light field looks sharper than it really is.
Keep out of the reach of children. Work in a ventilated space and use respiratory protection when spraying. The manufacturer's instructions on the label always take precedence.
